[219] 09:39that doesn't require 100% concentration

[220] 09:42like cooking or cleaning,

[221] 09:45I always have something on in the background.

[222] 09:49Cleaning, cooking, washing the car, gardening, whatever,

[223] 09:56any task that allows you to listen to something else
--223--

[224] 09:59at the same time as doing something else,
--224--

[225] 10:02have something on in that language in the background.
--225--

[226] 10:05I know I'm saying it as if it's revolutionary
--226--

[227] 10:08but really, don't forget to do it.

[228] 10:10I know you can waste so much time
--228--

[229] 10:13and miss out on so much learning.

[230] 10:15By having it on in the background
--230--

[231] 10:17and not even listening,
--231--

[232] 10:18you will be getting used to pronunciation and accents.

[233] 10:23And by listening and concentrating on what they're saying,

[234] 10:25you will be familiarising yourself

[235] 10:28with certain grammar lexi,

[236] 10:29different vocabulary,

[237] 10:31but also, you will notice where you are lacking.

[238] 10:35So, if you listen to a radio programme about,

[239] 10:39I always say photography,

[240] 10:40what can I say?

[241] 10:42So if you listen to a radio programme about politics,

[242] 10:45for example.

[243] 10:46My last point is make it daily.

[244] 10:50Focus on frequency and consistency.

[245] 10:53I always say to my students

[246] 10:55that 20 minutes a day of high quality,

[247] 10:58not even studying,

[248] 11:00just language acquisition,

[250] 11:04I sometimes surprise myself

[251] 11:06with the words that come out of my mouth,

[252] 11:0820 minutes a day of high quality English time,

[253] 11:13there we are,

[254] 11:14that sounds more like something Lucy would say,

[255] 11:17is much, much, much more valuable

[256] 11:19than 140 minutes all in one day.

[257] 11:24So make the general immersion

[258] 11:27and the thinking and the speaking to yourself

[259] 11:29something that you do throughout your day.

[260] 11:31Make it part of your routine.

[261] 11:33Make it become automatic to you.

[262] 11:36I sometimes now go for an hour thinking in Spanish,

[263] 11:41you know, thinking out loud in my head in Spanish

[264] 11:45and then I realise and I go,

[265] 11:46"God, I've just been speaking in Spanish the whole time."

[266] 11:51And it's because I do it so often it becomes automatic.

[267] 11:55Then, the little tweaks

[268] 11:58and the little kind of self help part
--268--

[269] 12:01that you're doing at the end
--269--

[270] 12:02which is searching definitions for words,
--270--

[271] 12:06working on the grammar that you've identified
--271--

[272] 12:08that you're lacking in
--272--

[273] 12:09or attempting to expand your vocabulary,

[274] 12:11that should be short and it should be daily.
